Unusual Motions - a brief history of time (signatures)

Saturday, May 12, 2018 - 7:30pm

Unusual Motions is, as the subtitle suggests, a study of time signatures (and time itself).  The time signature of a piece helps determine the "feel" (waltzes are in "3", marches are in "2", etc.).  We use the time signature to subdivide the music into measures.  Here we demonstrate how the time signature can be used to radically alter the feel of a piece, to make it drive forward or slow down, or feel more energetic, peaceful, or just downright silly!

We are playing pieces by:

Samuel Hazo

Murray Gold

Pierre Leemans

John Barnes Chance
