Spotlight On: Ballet of Unhatched Chicks

Stasov's comment:  "Hartmann's design for the decor of a picturesque scene in the ballet Trilby."

Hartmann designed costumes for several ballets.  In this case, the portrait was actually a costume sketch for a ballet also known as The Elf of Argyle, which played at the Bolshoi in 1871.  The surviving portrait is one of the more well-preserved of the collection.
